Understanding Why Regular Dental Check-Ups Are So Important

Everyone knows that you are supposed to go to the dentist on a regular basis for a check-up and a cleaning. However, many patients don't quite understand why the exams are so important, especially if they're taking care of their teeth properly at home. In order to preserve your dental health, it is crucial that you visit a dentist once every six months so that any major dental issues can be caught early on – and hopefully treated without consequence. Here's what happens at a routine dental appointment:

All-Inclusive Dental Cleaning

While you may brush and floss your teeth as you should, it doesn't mean that you shouldn't visit the dentist. The dentist has special tools that can remove any built-up tartar, plaque and other bacteria from your teeth, gum line, etc. Some of these areas can be hard to reach and thoroughly clean on your own. It is important that this plaque is removed because it is the primary source of tooth decay, gum diseases and oral infections.

Examination of Entire Mouth – Namely Gums and Teeth

You will get more than  cleaning, as your entire mouth will undergo a very comprehensive exam. In some cases, dental x-rays may be necessary. A visual examination of your teeth, gum and mouth as a whole helps the dentist see how healthy your teeth and gums are. In addition, your dentist will be able to see any possible warning signs of tooth decay or gum disease.

Determining Further Dental Treatment

In some cases, your regular exam will warrant further dental treatment. For example, your dentist may see signs of oral cancer or gum disease, which would reveal the need to schedule another appointment for a cancer screening or other treatment. If you were to only go to the dentist every few years, then the problem could be so far gone that it is irreparable. However, by going to your dentist every six months, these issues can be caught before they worsen and cause more problems.
