Porcelain Veneers

What are porcelain veneers?

Veneers are porcelain shells that protect the undamaged parts of your tooth. The porcelain used in veneers is formulated to mimic the rigidity and textured surface of your natural tooth. The finish on veneers resembles the properties of your natural tooth enamel. It resists biofilm such as plaque and prevents direct damage to the base of your tooth.

Porcelain veneers have the advantage of a customizable appearance. They can be created to match the color of the teeth you already have or be made completely white to help redesign your smile.

How can veneers help me?

Patients who undergo fitting for veneers need to:

  • Cover stains that can't be removed by standard teeth cleaning
  • Hide cosmetic damage from tooth decay
  • Close or cover gaps or uneven teeth

Covering stains

Teeth stains stem from poor dietary habits and from foods and beverages with strong, deep colors.

The sugar in candy and soda break down tooth enamel and weaken your teeth. Weak teeth are more vulnerable to staining. Brightly colored candies and dark beverages such as tea and coffee take advantage of weakened teeth. They leave tannins and other pigmentation on the surface of your teeth.

Juices and sauces also seep into porous tooth enamel. The combination of discolorations tends to turn teeth shades of yellow and brown. Veneers allow the tooth to enjoy the protection of a renewed tooth surface as well as a permanent boost in whiteness.

Hiding decay

Tooth decay is a process that occurs over time. Most people won't notice the tooth decay occurring on their teeth. Your dentist can identify serious tooth decay and recommend a plan of action.

Tooth decay can often be curbed and covered by veneers. After treatment from your dentist, porcelain veneers will help rebuild your smile.

Closing gaps

Gaps are caused by misaligned teeth as well as teeth that have grown in at different sizes. Veneers can be sized to make your teeth appear closer together or more evenly sized and spaced. Since they fit directly over your teeth, you can retain the shape of your natural smile while improving its balance.

What happens during my porcelain veneer procedure?

Your dentist will use a local anesthetic to make sure you are completely comfortable. We'll create a perfect base out of your damaged tooth for fitting a veneer. To create the base, the dentist must remove the front layer of your tooth. While you wait for the next steps to be complete, your teeth will still be usable.

The dentist will then take a mold of your teeth. The mold gives the veneer fabricators a full look at your bite. The veneers will then be customized for you and sent to Fountain of Youth Dental.

Once ready, we'll roughen your tooth and then cement your veneer in place.

How do I care for my veneers?

Practice regular oral hygiene and eat a healthy diet. With proper regular care, veneers can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years.
