Sedation Dentistry Makes Dentistry Easy!

What happens during sedation?

Fountain of Youth Dental uses sedation dentistry for advanced procedures in the office. Our sedation comes in the form of an intravenous drip (IV) sedation for dental procedures. IV sedation dentistry is also known as “twilight sleep” or “sleep dentistry.”

During your procedure, you are given an IV injection containing anesthetic. We can numb the area first so the injection will be painless. You will be conscious the whole time, but in a period of extreme relaxation. You will recall very little, if anything, of the procedure afterward.

Are there any drawbacks?

Twilight sleep dentistry is safe for people in good health. Do not undergo sedation dentistry if you have one of the following conditions:

  • Lung, kidney, or liver problems
  • Sleep apnea
  • CNS depression
  • Pregnancy
  • Allergy to benzodiazepines

Before twilight sleep procedures, we will talk to you about your health to make sure it is the best option for you.

Sedation dentistry before and aftercare

Do not eat or drink for eight hours before twilight sleep dentistry. Also, let your dentist know in advance if you are taking Valium or any other benzodiazepines.

You will feel a bit groggy after IV sedation. Have a friend or family member take you home and stay with you for a few hours until the effects have worn off. Rest and refrain from driving, operating heavy machinery, or strenuous activity for the rest of the day.

After sedation, light food and drink, such as toast and a glass of water, is recommended. Within 24 hours, you should be able to resume your normal routine.

Why do you use iv instead of laughing gas?

IV sedation is a faster-acting anesthetic. It is also more relaxing than laughing gas. While laughing gas is a good option, our practice wants to make sure you are as comfortable as possible during the procedure. IV sedation lets that happen.

Twilight sleep sedation is a step below general anesthesia. This allows you to be almost asleep but lets us give requests while you are under. Your responses help us give you the results you want.
